Today the groups swopped and we visited the "Home of Joy" orphanage operated by the Catholic sisters and mostly from donations. Due to protocol we did not take any photos of the children. The group assisted with the cleaning of the grounds and feeding the babies...later in the morning the task was to play with the children and keep them occupied with ball games etc.
In the afternoon we visited the Smiling Hearts school only to find the old school had been demolished and a shanty school operating on the patch of ground over the road. A family from Brisbane has offered to build a new school of four classrooms, hence the demolishing in progress...the new school will be brick and tile roofing and definitely offer more comfort and space. In the mean time, Ally the school founder and principal, has rented the ground over the road and simply shifted four bamboo class there for the next 5 months.
The groups helping out here are doing loads of manual labour cleaning the area and preparing the classrooms for use since this move happened only five days ago. During the day we were hit by the biggest downpour we have had since arriving but it did not dampen any spirits and several students also turned out to assist with the clearing of the grounds. The photos tell their own story.
